If you are planning on driving to work, you can live just about anywhere. If you want to use the Metrorail system, I recommend the left-hand side of the red line, orange line, or blue/yellow line. The further out you go, the cheaper it will be.

Thanks for the link, just out of curiosity why do you reccomend the left side(s)? are those areas generally nicer?

The suburbs west of DC are substantially nicer than East of DC.

Plug for my hometown RDU area in NC. Only 1-2 hours away from Wilmington and the beaches, depending on what part of the area you choose. I know that the distance may be out of your range, but I think it is a decent tradeoff if you consider the lifestyle here. And apparently we are a haven for yuppie northerners.
