Thinking of moving away from Boston after this year... not sure where though, HELP

I have lived in Massachusetts my whole life (in the yuppie suburbs), and for the past 4 or so years I have lived in or around Boston (i.e., Newton, Cambridge, Brookline). I want to get out of the Boston area (northeast in general; maine, nh, vt.). However I want to be on either coast... nothing more than 30-45 mins to the ocean.

I am currently in my final year of law school, so work availability will play some role. I am 25 so basically no ties to consider but family. All my family, including 4 neices and 1 nephew live in Massachusetts so east coast is best but may consider Cali; here are potentials:

*Fla. (west palm and south, which means probably only WPB or Miami)
*D.C. (probably not living in DC but know some people who live in nearby Maryland who like it)
*North or South Carolina as long as its on the coast; (maybe Wilmington or Charleston)
*West Coast I would consider S.F. and south... problem is 1. I have never been to Cali; and 2. it is as far from my family as I can get; so unless I went to visit and it was my dream place it is probably a long shot....

any input would be great... on these places I mentioned or other areas I should cehck out.. career wise I would like to stay in or around a medium/large city. Out of the places listed I have only been to Miami/WPB where I lived for a year. Once I have a list down I am planning a mini raod trip to do some visiting...

Don't go to NC, Wilmington sucks. Outside of Florida and Atlanta, I would probably stay away from any place below DC.

Check out NYC, Philly, DC.

could you elborate a bit on why NC/SC coastal cities suck? I have heard they are quite nice....but then again I have never been myself.

not really interested in NYC nor Philly... I like NYC as a place to visit but would not enjoy living there.

Also if someone has a suggestion if they could add a bit of info behind it that would be great. I have done very little travel so I don't really know much about the pros and cons of certain areas. Obviousally before I made any major decisions I would go visit potential places (cities) but I wanted to start the thought process and get a potential list going, basically doing so by reaching out to friends and fnaily members for their experiences and of course websites, however most of the websites I have been on are always pointing out the positives and thats all.

If you're from New England, moving south will consist of unbearable summer heat and humidity.

Bal Harbour, Aventura for sofl. People go to west palm and miami to die, albeit in drastically different ways.

Chicago, NY, DC, probably Philly maybe Atlanta. I think you are putting too much on the beach. When you graduate and are working 100 hours a week, would it be better with the knowledge of a beach being close?

Hilton head and Charlston are nice but sleepy. I could see myself getting a DUI if I stayed any length of time.

I've known a couple bostonians who have made the move to Chi-town and really liked it. Dc is very nice, but depends what you are into.

I can only speak for DC.

Pros: Lots and lots of legal jobs, and it's fairly easy to move between private practice, government, and public interest. Very manageable city to live in. Plenty of outdoorsy and cultural things to do. Public transportation is clean and generally efficient.

Cons: Feels more like a large town than a real city, and lacks the excitement of a NYC, Chicago, or San Francisco. Social scene is very stratified; the joke that DC is "high school with a $3 trillion budget" is funny because it's true. Relatively high cost of living.

I lived there for a year so I can manage the heat... really didnt find it all that bad after about 3 weeks of being there.

I guess I should've left the beach part out, its not so much I want to be near the beach so I can go there all the time but rather I want to stay on the coast. I have never been to the mid-west or any mid america for that matter and have no desire to.

Really don't want anywhere too sleepy so thanks for the heads up on Hilton Head and Charleston, maybe a better place to reside a bit later in life.
