Are there any best practices / guidelines on hanging frames / pictures on the walls? Like above eye sight, etc.? Thanks in advance.

It really all depends on the design you're going for.

I've heard museums hang paintings at 5'6" through the middle of the painting, the average eye level of an adult man. I can't verify.

I believe this is right. I know they hang for the eye level of the average height male, but I don't know the level. In a home it is different, both because you are not hanging for the average person, and because you might want to create some sort of visual effect separate from being properly hung.

I know a thing or two about being properly hung.

When I re-did my whole apartment a few years back, some interior design books/sites recommended 57" high at the center of the frame. That was also supposed to coincide with museum guidelines. I found that a bit too short for my tastes, but it was a good starting point to counterbalance the tendency to hang things too high.

If you've only got 8 foot ceilings or something, 5'7" might look high and call for adjustment.

The general guideline is that the center of the picture should be 57" - 60" from the ground. That seems a bit low, but most people hang their pictures way, way too high.
