Best credit card for miles rewards

Since I started working, I pretty much go on one vacation a year. Likely, international. I'm looking for a credit card rewards program that will give me the most miles and most flexibility for regular purchases. What's the best card out there?

By the way, I have a Starwood Amex already, so my lodging is taken care of. Really looking for the best airline rewards for someone who doens't fly often.

Sort of depends on who your miles are with.

I don't have miles with any airline. I'm hoping for a credit card for which I can use the rewards miles for a variety of major airlines.

Miles & More Credit Cards give great mileage, especially if you have a Senator ranking or higher. However, since most of their airlines are European, it might not be your cup of tea. I believe their only domestic airline in America is United.

I just got the Orbitz card from Capital One. Not sure how good the rewards will be yet, but once I earn them I can use them to buy travel through Orbitz, which means (if I understand it correctly) it'll work with buying any airline ticket on the site.

As an aside, it's also the only US company I found in my research that doesn't charge a fee for purchasing in a non USD currency. Good if you travel outside the US or buy from international shops often.

What you have is probably the best already... Starwood lets you transfer your starwood points to most of the major mileage programs. If you transfer a certain amount (20K I think) you get an extra 5K as a bonus. Plus, if you spend a certain amount in a year, you're automatically upgraded to Starwood Gold.

Otherwise, get whatever card your airline of choice is partnered with. If you don't have a preference, think of which airlines have hubs close to where you live.

These programs are likely to diminish as the new credit card legislation kicks in. As I understand the legislation did NOT address the merchant fees, but those are probably next on the chopping block. If a merchant loses 2% of each purchase to the credit card issuer and the credit card issuer can afford to give half of that back to the customer, do you think maybe the fees are too high?
