here's the thing, the only really bad thing about italy is the tourists, so when you go a little off season, less tourists everything is better. I took my wife once in october, maybe even november.

I like the idea of multiple cities - I very seldon stay in a city for more than 2 nights, although rome can be an exception.

I would also recomend Bologna, great food, almost no tourists, nice enough archetecture.

We spent a week of our honeymoon in Sicily & the Aeolian Islands. I'm pretty sure it was early October - still quite warm (hot!) but mostly empty of tourists. You can get some manageable city-stuff w/ Palermo & Siracusa (I'd avoid Catania unless you're using the airport), but it would be a different experience than the usual Rome/Florence/Venice trip. Very beautiful & amazing food. Island very easy to circumnavigate by car, and Italians love little babies!

Palermo/Monreale/Segesta, Erice/Trapani/Marsala, Argrigento, Siracusa/Noto, Taoromina/ Aeolians

With a child in tow, I would keep a simple itinerary. I enjoy Milan, but then I like cities. Maybe make that the home base if that is where you fly into and go to Lake Como for a day, down to Bologna, stop at lambo museum for day trips. I agree on avoiding Venice with your child. Trains are good there subway, light and heavy rail.

I sometimes like to hire guides when I travel, you get so much more of the history and background. The last time I was there I had a guide who pointed out the original marketplace which I never looked twice at, probably because it was on the way to find the canoli cart guy, and I heard a lot of the history about some of the buildings that you otherwise just look at and say "well, that's nice".

You could blast through Milan in a day and I guess if you are one of those people with a destination checklist that would be good, but I say relax, see the museums (there is one of the pietas there, last supper, get a tour) the church, the arc de peace etc.

Is Milan a good city to see, or is it overly businesslike? Should I start somewhere else, like Florence, or even Genoa or Turin?

dint get where in Germany you're coming from, nor your tentative itinerary__ ei, if you're def flying into Italy, and if you're doubling back to Germany to get back home. anyway, thought i'd chime in with slightly different twist if starting in proximity to Munich. :: cross posted from "Italy Trip" thread__ maybe you can do the [reverse] :: btw, Milan is deferrable :

what's dreamy about Venice was the atmosphere, the vibe. the whole scene__ 2 halcyon days, then off to Munich on a night train.

forgot you were coming from germany - take the train. the night train from munich to milan is great, you go through the alps. I have done it several times the other way, and you see the sunrise in the mountains.

Thanks to all for the advice. I am coming from Munich, but the gf and baby will be flying in to meet me wherever it is we decide to start. Having now gotten several warnings on Venice, I am considering just doing Rome and Naples/Amalfi. The train from Rome to Naples is probably a piece of cake, but is that route a good one to consider by car? Seems like it would be a nice place to drive.

Easy drive, but driving in Naples is likely more memorable than a flood in Venice.

You can find 'em if you look, particularly on the stretch of via Emilia on the way out, toward Modena.

The name 'bolognese' has been given to felatio, as the act has also assumed other geographically specific names.

I've only been in the summers when it is crowded and hot. October sounds lovely. I'm trying to schedule a trip in December or January, when we can manage school/work shedules. Buon viaggio!
