Whiskey Recommendation <$100

My friend is moving to the other side of the world (literally) and I would like to get him a nice whiskey for his going away bash (he digs the stuff). Any recommendations $100 and under? I know almost nothing about whiskey.

This is a very, very broad topic. What kind of whiskey does he like? Scotch? Bourbon? Other? You can get plenty of very, very nice bottles of single malt scotch and/or bourbon for under $100. More guidance necessary.

Lets go the bourbon route. I apologize, I know this is a broad topic.

As far as Bourbon goes, personally, I'm a fan of Woodford Reserve. As far as Scotch goes, I like the older Glenfiddich's, and some of Glenlivets (single malts for the win! -- not that blues and blacks aren't good).

Glenfiddich 21 is quite good. You can get it for around 100 bucks. Highland Park 18 is pretty good too and is right aorund 100 Balvenie 21 is one of my personal favorites, but then again im not really a scotch guy. Go single malt if he is a scotch guy, blended scotchs are for girls.

If you are going bourbon - Jefferson's Reserve cannot be beat (even next to a Pappy Van Winkle family reserve)
Favorite single malts: Cragganmore if your prefer a speyside, Lagavulin for a Islay and Talisker for an Island.

+1 on the Cragganmore, Lagavulin, Talisker recommendations

If you plan to go with a bourbon, I would try to find Pappy Van Winkle, either the 17 year old (should be about $75 or less) or the 20 year old (if you are lucky, you will find it in the $100 range). If you can't find those, then the Jefferson's Reserve is a good choice (although personally, I prefer PVW to Jefferson's anyday) as well. Thing is in bourbons, there are only a few in the over $100 price range, and almost none in the $60 to $100 price range. There are many around $60 that are very good whiskies.

+1 for Woodford Reserve. Should run you about $30-$40.

I am familiar with Woodford Reserve, it is good, but I would like to up the ante a bit.

Please don't get Glenfiddich or Glenlivet. Please.

So far: 1) Pappy Van Winkle 2) Jefferson's Reserve

Spending more than $40 on a bottle of burbon isn't going to buy you much more quality if any at all. You should buy a nice bottle of scotch whisky if you are adamant on spending around $100.

$100 is more of a ceiling
