How many bicycle gears do I need?

I never learned how to ride as a kid (everything was either within walking distance or outside of riding distance), but I want to teach myself now. Budget around $500, looking at an Electra Townie or something similar.

But they have so many different options for gears - single speed to 21 - 3-5-8-11-19 in between I think. How many gears (roughly) do I need for riding to the gym/market (a couple of miles) and just around my neighborhood for fun?

Any major hills? If not, gearing isn't actually necessary. Otherwise, 21 is pretty standard for an every day sort of mountain bike.

What he said. A 3 speed hub gear would suit your situation though.

if i were to buy a townie, i would go for a 5 speed. i recently rode an electra cruiser though, and liked it more than the townie. i think the cruisers also cost much less.

just one, man.

Minimum 7. 21 is common. Unless it's a single or a three-speed, it won't make much of a difference either way. Your body and riding behavior will adapt to the number of gears you have.

Fixed gear bikes are for fags.
