Ties without top button undone

Is it possible to wear a tie with the top button of shirt undone and get away with it in an office setting?

I would say "yes". But, it depends on the size of the shirt.

In the deadly heat and humidity of Japan's summer, I find myself with my top button open with my tie snugged up to hide it.

It can be hidden though?

I had it happen to me once when a hangover left me wanting not to button but I still had to get to work.

You'd have to have a large width tie and a pretty big knot. But the discerning admirer will be able to see it through once it becomes loose or slightly out of place as your day goes on.

Just say it's part of your style and point to the many magazine adverts where the tie is loosened and collar loose.

If necessity demands it, then unbutton. I do it myself during summer or exertion and no one cares. If your boss is wise, he will be concerned with your production, and not something as trivial as your having a button undone. You don't have to justify it to any intelligent person.

This depends if you can carry it off. Sinatra, for example, was seen frequently with his collar un-done. He looked rakish this way. Most, however, look like idiots or slobs. I'd err on the side of safety if I were you. You, unfortunately, are not Sinatra my friend...

You can if you're wearing office pants too!

As long as your shirt collar fits properly, you shouldn't have to.

I see many office workers and classmates try to pull this look off, but many times they just look like slobs. The only time I really see this working is Happy Hour.

Im amazed that someone would actually consult a website for advice, register, then make his first three posts asking for advice from a bunch of strangers. My advice: 1. go to the restroom 2. stand in front of the mirror 3. unbutton the top button 4. re-position tie 5. inspect your collar to see if you can get away with it.

my coworker does it all the time, but it looks like shit.
