They really are two different animals. Both offer fantastic quality, but these days I've been preferring Vass to EG. There's just something exciting about Vass compared to most other makers. When you hold one in your hands you'll feel the difference. Vass has more structure and the borgueing is slightly different - just enough to grab your attention. Well worth it to try a pair sometime.

I hear what you're saying, but the only thing in common may be the nomenclature -- at least as provided by kolecho. I assure you once you've handled a Vass shoe you'll see that it's not trying to imitate any other shoe. And though I've never worn EGs, I've handled them a few times (yes, I was drooling) and can tell you that at least by initial feel, the Vass feel more substantial, even in the U lasts that I have.

Does anyone have a shoe made out of Vass' dark brown cordovan? I want to see how it compares to cigar. Cheers.

TRINI - here you go. Cigar is the derby and dark brown the boot. I'd say the dark brown is a slight shade lighter, but they're very, very similar. It really depends on which specific piece of shell you get to determine the final color which you can't predict. It's always elusive to photograph the exact color of shell, but I hope this helps.

Trini - go cigar. Shell lightens with time. With some slight polish, it can be darkened easily if you wish.

Ok - first Vass ever. I'm thinking the following: F-last Dark brown calf Berkeley style, i.e. punch captoe oxford Double to single taper JR soles with rubber toes. How does that sound?
