I wear Allen Edmond's McAllister (65 Last) in 9D. Can anyone please tell me how this size would compare for Vass? I would really like to purchase one of their shoes, but I want to make sure I get the right size and am not stuck with an extremely expensive shoe that won't fit.

Like others have said, some sizing trial and error may be unavoidable. Nonetheless, I also wear 9D in AE 65. Size 42 on the F last fits me pretty well length and width-wise.

I wear 8.5D in the 65 last, and take 41.5 in the U last and 41 on the P2 last. F just doesn't work for my feet. You would probably be a 42 in the U last and a 41.5 on the P2 last, but everyone's feet vary. Vass is also notorious for some sizing inconsistency within its own lasts.

How do they handle returns? Or do they not offer such things? It's hard justifying paying so much for something that may or may not fit perfectly.

They do accept returns, but it's a hassle to deal with shipping shoes back and forth to Europe. I was in Budapest for a vacation and went to the Vass shop to be fitted in all their lasts, so I knew pretty well what would fit me and what would not.

You may want to try a retailer that accepts returns for your first few pairs until you lock in sizing. If you're in the US, NMWA has a good selection:

My first 2 Vass purchases were from them and I was glad I did as I had to exchange the U last shoe for one 1/2 size bigger.

I would recommend one of these two courses of action.

I went directly to MTO through the Budapest store, and my first attempt was a half size too big. Fortunately I was able to resell my pair and recoup the difference thanks to an instance of "Vass charm" resulting in the replacement pair getting discounted. And now I actually prefer the way that they made them to the way I requested them. How about that!

Whilst it is a royal pain in the arse to send shoes back that don't fit, especially if you are from the other side of the pond, I have to say Vass and Mr Kuti specifically are first class in handling returns. One of the great pluses I find for dealing with some of the smaller specialist companies is that they really understand the importance of customer service and repeat business. For sure Vass has some idiosyncrasies when it comes to sizing but my experience is that they will do everything they can to get you happy and in the correct fitting shoe whatever that takes. I find their customer service second to none.

So, I'm currently in the grips of such madness that I am contemplating (quite seriously) ordering a double monkstrap boot in oxblood or dark brown grain. I'm soliciting opinions pro and con!

Here's my list so far.

Con:

1) it may be a pain to put on and take off. My double monk shoes are kinda.
2) it's a ridiculously dandy stifle that I probably won't pull off too well.

Pros:

1) I really really want it.

Here's a photo that Mr. Kuti sent me (will NOT be requesting this particular colorway)

Looks absolutely awful, and I would consider you a fool if I saw you wearing them, but do what you feel like

That's as good a pro as you can conceive!!

I've see a few of Vass' all leather double monk boots, and I really like them.

I HATE the makeup posted above, but that's just my aversion to suede...

Give it a go!

I like it, not that particular color scheme but I think they're nice. StC does one that looks awesome to me, I will have no problem wearing them.  I have one on order, Ill post pics when they arrive.

Yeah that particular color way is not my cup of tea, but I think it would look nice in a dark grain color. No?

This is good. Y'all are kinda pushing me towards no.
