Do you think going to Budapest is the best option for placing an order?
Do you know/ recommend which hotels are close to the Vass shop?
I was in Budapest in August and stayed at http://www.tripadvisor.se/Hotel_Review-g274887-d1146424-Reviews-Gerloczy_Rooms_de_Lux-Budapest.html which happened to be located on the same street at the 2 Vass shops. We were very happy with the hotel but it's all subjective.

When I was at Vass they didnt actually have a lot to offer in my size from the stocks (?) + you should visit both stores as they have . Just a heads up that you might actually leave without finding anything unless you go bespoke. The sizes are a bit tricky imho as I tried on shoes on the same last & size but depending on the pair i tried on they could be: to small, perfect, to big.

great report from justin. I exchanged a few pm's with him. he's a nice guy.
a little blasphemic input:
as much as I love Vass, as an Austrian I'm always torn with the extensive offer from Viennese shoemakers, which are flying under the sf radar. keep the faith.
additional, I have a sweet spot for discovering small workshops on the countryside and other projects with heart and soul. so many options to chose from...
ps: English shoes don't do it for me. no way.

Would you share some of the Austrian shoe makers details with us. I like to explore other unknown (to me) makers sas well.

rule of thumb: different models have a different geometry, if you mean that.

e.g. a wing tip feels different than a halfbrogue or a norweger.

Received a response from Vass.

My price included VAT.

Summary of my email from them:

  1. Ship at lower declared value, but wouldn't be VAT free
  2. Ship with VATdeducted, but needs to go through custom process (not sure what is meant by that)
  3. They would only use FedEx because they have had bad experience with Post.

with regards to option 2, i imagine you're having the shoes delivered to outside the EU? if so then by going through customs and declaring that the item has been definitively exported they can effectively zero rate the sale (since they know where it's going and who the buyer is), so no VAT. had they charged VAT they should be able to refund it to you and claim it back on their own VAT returns (can you tell i work with indirect taxes? :p)

^^#2 is the normal process, they would deduct VAT. I think it would be a wash, as I would incur the FedEx charge.

I only hoped to miss the FedEx charge, as some people have said Vass is/was willing to work with them on this.

Thanks

I don't mind paying taxes and duties, but I hate paying the "brokerage" fees

You don't have to pay brokerage if you did it yourself. It's a simple process that can be done by fax and email. Just let any carrier know that you will do your own brokerage with customs. The carrier must provide you the paperwork and you will take this to customs completed. Customs will do thier bit and send back to you which you will send to carrier, at which time they will release the shipment.

Brokerage is a huge F.....service scam that carriers enter and subtly try to let on that is part of mandatory customs clearing. It's the equivalent of a store clerk charging you a brokerage fee to fill out a purchase request.
