I did, this was to compare to Vass. Don't sweat it!!

Maybe i can't make the detail out well enough on my iPhone but is the Vass "fiddleback" just how the sole is "painted"? There does not seem to be the actual shape of the fiddleback that the Santoni's have. I like the fiddleback when it is real. Don't much like the faux element.

This is exactly what I was trying to show. Santoni LE did the fiddleback years ago before G&G started making shoes on their ow. I love G&G and I think G&G have the loveliest fiddleback waists on their DECO MTO range, then their MTO range. Vass merely pain them onto their soles.

I don't know, these things are shoes, not pieces for a museum, you walk in the dirty street, go to urinals (like NY ranger well said), step in gravel and mud, all kind of ****, I never understood the desire for all this design on the soles, honestly, not trying to be an ass, can somebody please explain it to me?, I just want the soles to be strong and of high quality on par with the uppers.

I've heard this explanation that it's the attention to detail by the maker, a sign of craftmanship and dedication but that is bullshit imo.

Btw, all the santonis saratorial posted are just beautiful, now I wish to own one pair, and not because of the soles.

well, the painted part is not considered a fiddleback, surprise. a fiddleback is a structural element, like its counterpart the square waist, and belongs to the english bespoke tradition. obviously to the italian either. tbh, i don't know about this.

i don't know how often this needs to be discussed again and again. it seems to be that all the informative threads about shoemaking are widely ignored. i don't get it.

Thanks Fritzl. I think that is what I was trying to say. Sole dressing made to resemble a fiddleback just isn't the same thing.

Thanks. I must have misunderstood your previous posts. I thought you and were arguing as to if Vass actually did a fiddleback and the confusion in people's terminology.

It is about quality and attention to detail.
If a shoemaker puts that much effort in the sole, just imagine the quality of the uppers.

I agree with you, these are just objects and most of us are just enthusiasts. Nothing serious! We are bored old men trying to find an outlet after 12 hours of work.
At the end of the day, I will give them up to spend an hour with my grandkids or help someone with a problem. Until, then, it is a passion for someone else’s talent and efforts.
