i'm old school:

Jesus and Mary Chain - Psychocandy (one song off the album, Just Like Honey, is on the LiT soundtrack)

Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation

The Lilys - In the Presence of Nothing (if MBV had put out an album in between Isn't Anything and Loveless, it would be this album)

Japancakes - Loveless (an acoustic cover of the entire Loveless album)

that being said, MBV fuckin' rule and Loveless is easily top 10 fave albums of all time for me.

Pale Saints or Lilys, maybe? Or earlier MBV. Maybe even some later Spacemen 3, Spiritualized or Spectrum? But, really, no one comes close to MBV for noise-pop brilliance.

The closest thing I've heard to Loveless is Portishead's Third. The last Raveonettes album has its moments as well. The Velvet Underground at its noisiest is a good ancestor of Loveless.

Most shoegaze/dream-pop etc. is too smooth. I like a lot, love some, but none of it as punishing as MBV.

Saw them last year in Santa Monica, show was ok and never thought i would have the chance to see them live. It was insanely loud though... had to wear ear plugs (which obviously means you can't really hear the sound). I know it was intentional, but it took away from the experience, IMO.

Thanks for the suggestions dudes. Yeah I am a fan of the early Velvet Underground noise rock, and of course Psychocandy is an absolute classic. Funny story - when I first heard Just Like Honey when I was 15, I immediately thought to myself that it would be the perfect song for the last closing scene in a film. Well, the bastards who edited/did the music for Lost in Translation really stole my idea. I was pissed to say the least.
