Gift for host

Thread Starter
I'm going to NYC in a few weeks and the family of a guy from a certain forum is hosting me. What do I bring as a gift to thank them? Is a bottle of wine too easy?

Wine is always appropriate. Fresh flowers are good.

Or something from where you live / having to do with the forum topic.

Maybe ask the forum buddy what their family might appreciate? What do they like that is difficult to get in NYC, or that your place of residence is known for?

I've heard wine - unless specifically suggested by the host - is inappropriate as a gift (I suppose to a dinner party or brought by an out-of-town guest) because it suggests that the host's wine isn't good enough. Can't remember where I read that. Hope it wasn't GQ or Esquire.

That's only if you give them the wine and make hints/tell them to open it for that nights meal

Not so sure about that one. I always see wine being brought to dinner parties as the default gift, regardless of who is hosting and what wine is being served, or was brought by the guest for that matter.

OTOH I think it can be considered quite rude if the guest brings wine and the host does not open it, as a general rule.

"How DARE you!!!!!???? What, my wine isn't good enough? You.....you get OUT of MY HOUSE....NOW!!!!". No whey. Nobody ever takes offense to a bottle of wine, especially an interesting or rare one. Ferrari Carano Chardonnay ($25-30 a bottle) is a really great California wine. Beautiful balance of oak to fruit. Every time I've brought a bottle the lucky folks drinking it rave about how good it tastes.
