ipod touch vs. ipod nano

Tomorrow I'm buying an imac for my parents, mainly so they can do skype w/ their grandkids. My siblings are chipping in. It comes w/ a free ipod touch or any ipod under $230. Since I'm setting it up, I get the ipod. But I'm not sure if I should get the touch or the nano. Which should you get, and why?

touch. wi-fi, apps, 3.5" screen, apps, wi-fi, and apps

Touch cause overall it's just better and has so many more capabilities. Would only go for the nano if you want something super small e.g. for the gym.

Touch. Easier for the old people to grasp. I've seen way too many get screwed up trying to use the thumb wheel.

Thanks guys. I am a fan of "thin and light," but this would replace a 4 yr old Mini that died a few months ago. Either of these new pods would be smaller than I'm used to. In favor of the touch is certainly the wi-fi, but I'm not so sold on the apps. What's great about them? And is 8 gigs enough for a touch? It's between the 16 gig nano or the 8 gig touch.

Nano hands down. I've got both the nano and the touch but I hardly ever use the touch. It's awkward to carry around, you can only connect to unsecured wifi networks, it doesn't have as much storage space, and the majority of the apps aren't overly useful as they depend on internet access (and at least where I live, unsecured networks are hard to find).

If its for listening to music then its the nano. Apps are overrated if you dont have access to wi-fi networks or dont want spend money on shit you wont use past week 1.

Ah, good points, thanks. Another reason not to get a touch is that I may also succumb to the iphone's siren song in the next year. My 5 yr old cell phone died a couple months ago, and I bought a $20 replacement from Walgreens, thinking I'd get an iphone soon. But now I'm liking this phone, and I'm reluctant to pay $30 or whatever a month for a data plan. Hmm...

The Touch is a small computer, perfect for surfing the internets. I used mine all the time, even when i was sitting at the mac. There's no contest, get the Touch

Huh? I've connected to WEP secured networks on a borrowed Touch.

The touch is great device but not the better music player. Apple actually removed the search function from the touch. By the nature of the touch screen you can do things like skip tracks without looking at the display. You also get less memory for the same price. However, the touch is a passable PDA. The web browser works quite well as does the Email program. If you intend to use the extra capabilites then go with the touch.

I'd prefer the classic over any other iPod model any day. I'm using my iPod video (which I purchased a few months before the first aluminum Classic was released) and I'd rather keep it than switch to the touch. I just really like the click wheel, I guess. I also don't like having the headphone jack at the bottom of the device, it's so awkward. That's one reason why I don't like either the nano or the touch.

I got the touch but have "buyer's" remorse. May exchange it for the nano. I just think I'd use it more, and I'm afraid of the possibility of disappointment that they'll be no open wifi signal when I need it. I appreciate all the thoughts. Keep 'em coming.

Your mistake here was failing to realize that I'm never wrong.

Never again. The deciding factor for the touch decision was calling my younger, more computer-savvy brother in the store to ask if we should get MS Office or iWorks. I also asked him if I should get the touch or the nano. He said, get touch and sell, then buy nano. I hate selling things though. He suggested I try posting it on Craigslist. Stupidly, I tried it, but I think the only replies I got were scams like "If you'll send it to me, I'll pay you twice your price, just take down your ad so I'll know you're serious." Why pay twice the price when you can get it from Apple for $20? It still sits on my desk and I don't know whether to open it or to exchange it. btw, where's Tokyo Slim? Just being nice?
