Cleans vs. Pendlay Rows - Page 3

Thanks for the advice, guys. I did 5x3 powercleans today. Probably did them wrong., but I think that the SS text & videos will make more sense after having made an attempt (albeit a lame one). I did some pendlay rows because I still had energy. Huzzah!

I haven't looked at the starting strength program, but I don't understand why this is a "vs." thread. I do both lifts in the same workout. The Pendlay row, when done with a somewhat wide grip (b/t a clean grip and a snatch grip), is really an isolating exercise. I do 5x5, followed by a few heavier 1's. I also deload after every rep. To me, cleans and power cleans are a completely different class of exercise. Why one or the other? Why?! Goddamnit! Fuck!

The original Starting Strength program had power cleans, but someone on the BB.com forums recommended against cleans as being too technical to learn without a coach and substituted rows instead as the other pull from the floor (alternating with the deadlift).

It's worth noting that Pendlay rows are supposed to be done explosively, which is one of the things that distinguishes them from barbell rows.

I don't really understand why rows replace cleans in some variants of Starting Strength. It's something about "a small pull from the floor" to complement the deadlift "a big pull from the floor". Rows overlap a fair bit with pull-ups when it comes to muscles involved.

I did a Pendlay row progression and the problem I found is that no matter what I did I couldn't maintain proper form as the weight went up. I guess that means I plateaued? Then I did inverted rows until I could easily do a set of 15. But adding weight to an inverted row is too much of a pain. So now I'm just doing pull-ups and power cleans.
