I'd have some something with an * for sure. However, thinking about it, maybe it was some sort of ploy to get people to order food that couldn't be got rid of any other way?!
there is a very good italian resterant near my house that has something like that on the menu - it says "this is the way italian food is supposed to taste. if you are used to italian american food, you may not like it. we won't adjust our food, and we won't replace it if you don't like the taste". I eat there all the time

Have you ever seen "The Big Night?" Funny movie, with some scenes that relate precisely to this.
EDIT: Here you go. A bit long, but thoroughly worth watching. And yes, that is Tony Shalhoub, and yes, also Mark Anthony:

Yes, I would order something with a *. Someone once claimed that white people could not eat ethnic food for various reasons and I was offended because that is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. If an entire race can enjoy it, so can anyone who's adventurous of another race. It might take a little bit of time to enjoy, but what a ridiculous statement to make. I understand that restaurant's concern, but would have phrased it less racistly. Saying "A * indicates an authentic *culture* dish. It may not be to everyone's taste, and is only recommended to those familiar with authentic *culture* cuisine. No substitutions or refunds will be offered if these dishes are ordered."
The more classy places (that I've been to at least) usually say "Ask server before ordering" Which translates to: This shit still has it's eyes, it will stare at you, don't act surprised.
I think the * and the disclaimer is a great idea, but it's probably bad for business unless the place is already super-popular. The more likely alternative is to have stuff on the menu or specials board only in the native language (not translated in english) or just have the waitstaff present off-menu items verbally. I'd try the * items if a trustworth person suggested it.
