How do you know my age? Just curious... I had quite few playmobils, the a-rabs were some of my favourites, was also a big fan of knights and other assorted medieval brutes. Kunk: Did you buy them some of the new sets? I have a pretty recent 1001 nights one that is pretty cool. I love how everyone is smiling while your kid is bound to have them gut each other with pickaxes at some point.

nickel candy bars large enough to give you a stomach ache.
playing marbles and loosing your stash to a sharpie.
walking chicagos alleys looking for empty pop bottles and the 2 cent deposit. 1 cent for candy. 1 cent in the gumball machine. if you got the striped gumball your prize was a nickel candy bar.
if you were lucky a milk bottle got you 5 cents.
gas was 25 cents and a gas war dropped it to 19 cents at times.
when you picked up the earpiece the operator asked "number please" you spoke into the upright and the operator repeated as she would plug you in.
home delivery of bakery and dairy products.
peddlers coming through the neighborhood selling fresh produce.
the dingdong bell that said the scissors and knife sharpener was here.
theres so much more i may come back later.

OK. I expect that I'm a bit younger than you (I was born in 1961) but your post jarred a few memories for me.

I remember back in the early '70's when my mom swore she'd never buy gas from the local DX station again after they raised their price to 30 cents.

Never had this experience. We lived in the city, but when we visited my grandparents' farm, they were on a "party line." The phone had a particular ring when it was for you and a different ring when it was for your neighbors. Really bad manners to listen in on the neighbors phone calls, so we only did it when mimmie and pawpaw weren't around.
