That's the issue: all of these recommendations are fit for a Manhattan condo/apartment replete with hardwood floors, high ceilings, and that classy vibe. The apartment the OP posted looks like the one I just moved out of that was $600/month and built in 1959.
Get a nice LCD TV, leather couch, stereo system, some basic lamps, coffee table, some book shelves, and make sure you have enough seating for your guests. Since you have a crappy apartment to work with, try and hang some tasteful art/photography to take away from the walls (or, as recommended, see if you can paint).
