+1 on paint. I painted my living room and bedroom and it made a dramatic difference.

I don't know why I clicked this link. I am now seriously thinking about buying a sofa I don't really need. Thanks though!

Are you renting the apartment/condo or outright buying it?

Get something with wood, floors, your apartment posted on the first page looks like my shitty built in the 60's college apartment. At least get a couch that random strangers havent had sex on a 1000 times (That would be a new couch).

That's the issue: all of these recommendations are fit for a Manhattan condo/apartment replete with hardwood floors, high ceilings, and that classy vibe. The apartment the OP posted looks like the one I just moved out of that was $600/month and built in 1959.

Get a nice LCD TV, leather couch, stereo system, some basic lamps, coffee table, some book shelves, and make sure you have enough seating for your guests. Since you have a crappy apartment to work with, try and hang some tasteful art/photography to take away from the walls (or, as recommended, see if you can paint).
