Chicago - Summer Trip

Thread Starter
Wife and I have an annual tradition of Chicago in mid-late November. Currently have plans for 4-5days this Summer (early teenage daughter in tow) and could use some advice as I'm not familiar with non-fall/winter options. Suggestions outside generic tourist activites would be appreciated. Theaters, playhouses, museums, exhibits that would appeal to the whole family aside from the obvious, (e.g., Shedd, AIOC)? Thanks in advance.

Not sure if you consider it "obvious", but the Architecture boat tour is one of the best attractions in the city. There are also a number of guided walking tours including the Frank Lloyd Wright stuff in Oak Park.

Check out Navy Pier for the Ferris Wheel and boat rides as well as the IMAX. Millennium Park is also a nice diversion and often host free music. I think there are movies in the park on Tuesday nights. Of course there are the usual museums and being a resident of Oak Park I have to +1 ChicagoRon's suggestion of heading out there as well. Easy Metra ride from downtown. Depending on when you come the annual Air and Water show is coming.

Check here as well.

It will be cold here in November, but you could take a carriage ride around downtown Chicago. Most companies have covered carriages and also supply blankets.

Checking out the Ledge at Sears/Willis Tower might also be a cool idea.

True the Green Line will get you there but can be a bit dodgey after dark.

The boat tour is well worth it.

Read the post again.

Here is a translation (of what seems clear to me): He normally comes in November and is familiar with fall/winter activities. Now he is planning a summer trip and wants to know what do during that time.

Also for the OP, check out metromix.com for schedules of various festivals and specific activites of when you will be here.

I would steer clear of Navy Pier personally unless you want to take a boat ride.

Yeah sorry about that. Reading comprehension fail on my part. LOL

the botanical garden is very nice. the archetectural boat tour is nice. there are a lot of options for kayaking and canoeing. aside from that, I don't know what a teenager likes to do - when my niece was here, i don't think I did a very good job of keeping her entertained. good luck.

we like the science and industry and the art museum very much, by the way.

Yeah. Like Francis91 I had a reading comprehension failure as well...neglecting to note that the OP stated "outside generic tourist activities"
