Brooks fans-- what does a Golden Fleece suit run? best option for interview suit? - Page 2

My first thought is the geographical one. If you are staying in S. Arizona the first and foremost thought is weight.

The other factor is what kind of impression you want to make.

For instance I recently bought two very similar greys. One was a tropical weight Samuelsohn (in probably an 8 oz wool). The other was a Zegna in 280 gram fabric. About the same weight and nearly the same color. And very wearable in Az.

But the real key is that I would not wear the Zegna to an interview. Simply because I would not want to out dress the interviewer. And I think you kinda alluded to that. The Samuelsohn is much the less showy suit. And that may even be too much for a government interview.

So consider your appointment and dress "down" if necessary.

aha, i should have clarified that. I will be spending the next 12 months on an overseas assignment; upon completion, i will be seeking a new position on the east coast area (probably Virginia, D.C., and other government-dominated areas of the country).

I'd like to go with a nice medium-weight suit, to minimize wrinkles and creases, which i can't stand in a jacket's back.

I think that between now and the time you return you should be able to find something. I think that there are alot of options for you to select.

I work with a number of high/mid level civil servants and even in a Brooks or Banks suit you would be among the best dressed. We really have only one guy who wears a suit every day. YMMV depending on the agency or firm to which you apply.

No matter what I think you need to remain conscious that if you get something really nice you could outdress the interviewer.

I'm in the same boat as you. While I would rather not buy a JOS Bank suit, I've found it almost impossible to find a solid navy suit of quality at a heavy discount(since it's a wardrobe staple). I might take the plunge and buy the Signature suit from Bank for $250. Any thoughts?

What size are you? Here's a gorgeous navy blue GF on Ebay in a 41R, and it's new with tags (I'm not the seller, don't worry):

This one is made in Italy rather than the US, but for this price, is a great suit.

I've had luck in Pittsburgh with GF on clearance, and then adding 25% discount. I've bought two of the Greenfield ones - solid navy and solid grey for around $500. You might be able to call around to a few BB's in different cities and see if you can have a sale/clearance GF shipped to your local BB. Just an idea.

BB is having a special sale on Wed., April 5th, where you can get an add't 25% off using your Brooks card. If you don't have a Brooks card, you can get an add't 10% off by signing up for one. There are ways to get them cheaply....just requires patience.

I've not bought one but know a bunch of people who like them. I don't know how you could go wrong for $250.

Just a quick heads up. The Brooks flagship store has a load of Golden Fleece suits on sale at $498. A lot of the suits I saw were winter weight suits.

To get flat front pants and double vents, you'd have to go MTM by the way -- I've never seen a Golden Fleece with ff pants, and double vents are rare for GFs as well.

The Italian line Golden Fleece do have double vents pretty much exclusively and are very nice. They sell them in NYC. The buttonholes are done by machine, however (except for the old Isaia made ones that Zjp3 got a couple years back).

So does anybody know who makes the Italian made GF? I saw a dual vented suit tonight that I loved, but did not even think about looking at the inside tag to see where it was made. Does Isaia still make them or is it someone else now?

A. Harris said it was Cantarellli now-a-days -- and that seems right to me. However, a couple years ago it was Isaia. My guess is that anything made up through 2003 was Isaia -- you can tell because the buttonholes are done by hand.

hello everyone...first time poster here.

yanks, i see you live in NYC. i do too. if i were you, i would go to century 21 (ther ei sone across from the world trade center) and you can find some really great deals.

i recently had to buy suits and i picked up a canali and armani for 470 a piece and a versace for 440. regularly priced they'd be around 2,000.

you can also find some great shirts and ties to wear with the suits in century 21 without breaking the bank.

best of luck.

Old thread I know but great tip. I went to the Pittsburgh store on Saturday looking at getting a MTM and ended up getting a near perfectly fitting Navy Martin Greenfield GF for $375. I happened to find it just sitting on a random rack. Saved so much I ordered 3 of the Special Order shirts and got a new tie. I will have pics once the alterations are done.
