In their view you are doing something wrong - you're not showing the attitude they want. To these employers it's not just about making X widgets for Y dollars - it's about doing it without causing the people around you grief. Attitude is important to them (and many other employers). They don't want people there who don't at least nominally enjoy what they are doing, or at least can't bring themselves to appear pleasant in exchange for their wage. When I was working at my various menial jobs throughout high school, I wasn't living the dream, but I knew it could suck more, and the money I made was going to help me do what I really wanted to do - go to college and get a job where the positive attitude would come naturally.

If you really can't bring yourself to stop with the outward misanthropy, I'd recommend working from home, or going into business for yourself. Another option - you said you aren't this way in front of clients - so perhaps think of your employer as your client as well, and show the same attitude to him or her as you show to the clients.

Statistician/actuary/accounting... something along those lines... I'm in the process of getting an honors bachelors in statistics right now... probably going to stay for my masters in statistics as well if I continue to enjoy what I am doing.

"What does an actuary's wife do when she has insomnia? She rolls over and says, "Tell me again, darling. Just what is it you do for a living?""

Just kidding - worked for an acturial consulting firm for many years. More seriously, you should consider how you want to project yourself at work. Do you want to be know as the person who does the bare minimum or someone who tries just that much harder. You may be a student but most companies look at students as potentil full-time recruits. Even if this is not your dream company - odds are a potential future employer will call them and ask about you. Do you want them to sum you up bby saying you lacked enthusiasm?

See what bothers me is that I DON'T do the bare minimum and I try very hard. I do the hardest jobs for the company and make the most money for them. They have monthly incentives for sales and lowest expenses and I have won it for the last 3 months straight; I have only worked there for 4 months. But I understand; I need to fake enthusiasm for these cock suckers until they love me or until I can find a job crunching numbers in an internship. And I know actuary work isn't the most stimulating for most people

If you enjoy it, acturial work can be lucrative.

p.s. I'm one of the "c*** suckers" you are referring to

Is "cock-sucker" still homophobic if it is applied to a woman?

People can sense when you don't want to be somewhere. You need to become a bit better at faking enthusiasm.

Let me share a secret with you . . . you're going to be at work whether you like it or not, so you may as well start liking it.

I was actually told that about half the employees are in this boat, too, not just me.

I just feel like these people expect WAY too much from someone at a summer job making a shit wage. I understand it's their business and life but if you really want go-getters, pay them a respectable wage and I am sure they'll bust their asses.

No doubt... I just honestly don't even know how to be enthusiastic about it. I pretty much hate most people in general, have zero people skills (aside from selling; I can sell shit by manipulating pretty well) and I just downright don't care.

You know who also reaquires enthusiasm while paying minimum wages? North Korea.

Welcome to USA circa 2009.
