Durian

My brother and his gf's father got me to pick some up for them this weekend. They are both into "unusual" foods so they were planning to serve some at a party this week. I am wondering what anyone can tell me regarding storing them for a couple days or anything regarding preparation.

Stick it in the freezer and put it in the fridge the night before to defrost. They're not very good after a couple of days. You can eat it as is or make a durian-flavored icecream or smoothie. Get a nice vanilla ice-cream and mix it with chopped up bits of durian. If you have big seeds, save them and boil them in some salt water for about 30-45 minutes. The seeds are pretty tasty to eat in and of themselves.

Thanks man. The are a lot bigger than I thought they would be. I lugged two of them from the market in Chinatown in Boston yesterday. I brushed one up against my knee and the spikes actually broke the skin! The lady at the market tried to warn me they are "dangerous" I guess so!

You eat enough durian and your skin will become thicker automatically.

Is this your first time with a whole durian? Opening it up might be tricky. Here's pretty good instruction on how to open one up: http://southeastasianfood.about.com/...seOpDurian.htm. Be sure to split up large sections of the shell, if any, as you may have smaller, hidden, durian segments inside.

On a related note, the shell is sometimes used to punish an unruly child in SE Asia by making him (I've never seen this punishment meted out on a girl) kneel on it for several minutes. I have pretty puncture-proof skin on my knees.

Or tough love, depending on whom that question is posed.

This stuff is interesting.

I don't know if there are different varieties. I know some Asian grocery stores sell the frozen variety.

I had some fresh durian on a trip to Hawaii. It has the consistency of very thick milk shake/mayo, but a bit sweet and pungent like an onion. Quite interesting. Not for me though.

It did not stink as much as I thought it was going to be.

Pungency also depends on the ripeness of the durian. All things being equal, the more ripe the fruit is, the more pungent it is, approaching the smell of week-old cotton gym socks worn during the peak of summer.

That is nuts! After my experience I can imagine that would be quite painful. I will definitely forward that link along to my brother. He is the type who would just start hacking away with a machete unless I tell him otherwise.

EWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW Worst 15$ I have ever spent and I'm usually pretty open to food. I felt like vomiting after the first spoonful.

Never tried it until about a year ago because I found the smell revolting, but now think they taste great. I just eat them as any other fruit, no preparation.

Just had some -- a friend gave me one, frozen, as a gift. I hung it on a peg off the porch to defrost for three hours, then dove in. The taste is not disagreeable, just requires a....mental realignment. Like banana custard. With lemon. And a whiff of compost.

It gets better with more samplings, kinda like a really pungent cheese. But congrats--unlike other weak men, you at least swallowed it down.
