Where do you search for cheap flights?

Thread Starter
All my life I've been using Expedia and have rarely looked anywhere else (just Southwest and Jetblue). I'm almost convinced that there are other sites out there that will give me better prices.

So where do you search for the lowest plane ticket. Clearly I would prefer non-stop flights, but since I am a small-timer, I will spend extra hours in terminals (where I just get wasted anyway so I actually don't save any money; I end up spending more, but it is fun? fml) just to save a few bux.

I'm looking for a one way ticket from Washington DC (IAD) to San Fran (SFO) or San Jose (SJC). Thanks.

Kayak has a pretty good interface and searches a bunch of the other big ones as well.

Anbody know of a good site (or agency) to book a cheap flight from Los Angeles to London?

Are you a student? If so check Statravel.com or give them a call and they can find affordable deals for you. Click their front page promotion now and it takes you directly to a deal from LA to London for $403.

Expedia is good, but if you're really willing to get creative go to beta.itasoftware.com

Expertflyer.com also lists all fares for most airlines on a given route by fare code and list the rules. A useful tool if you fly a lot and want to plan a trip to take advantage of very low rates.

In both cases, you'd need to take your itinerary to an agent for pricing, but you can get good ideas

+1, they are the best consolidator. They find flights that many airline sites don't have. My son saved $150 yesterday using it to book a SF-NYC-LA trip.

No idea, but I always used Virgin America for my flights from IAD to SFO or LAX. Always worked out to be the cheapest non-stop flight, and they have the plugs and LCD screens for every seat.

I usually start looking on Mobissimo.com

Kayak's good. You also want to sign up for Travelzoo's VIP newsletters. I always get tempted by last minute trips.

Round trip tickets are often cheaper than one-ways. For one ways, I also find one usually gets good value burning some miles instead of paying cash.. especially if you book business/first

If you are looking at Asia at any point, none of these sites do a decent job at all finding cheap fares. For now I think you have to go to the individual airlines, starting with AirAsia and then ticking off the particular country's local ones until you find the lowest fare. It's quite annoying that the big sites often don't include these smaller local airlines.

itasoftware used to pull up all sorts of dodgy airlines in the Caucasus/Central Asia when I was planning a trip there...

Even the most obscure airlines are usually linked to a common international booking system most/all travel agents use and which ITA's fare quotes are based on

Sign up for email notifications from various airlines and travel sights. Buy tickets when they have sales. Happens frequently. I plan my trips in advance and have bought up to 6 round trips at a time when the sales are on.

I use Kayak, but I also sometimes check Skyscanner.net because I can choose my departure point but leave destination open, then sort by price... so say you want to take of a week to anywhere and jsut want to find a cheap flight to somewhere random (sort of like turning up at the airport/cruiseline and taking a random cheapest ticket)... Some other sites Kayak, Skyscanner, Orbitz, Expedia, etc... They're a dime a dozen, but generally I find Kayak and one or two like Expedia to be best. http://www.ebookers.com/ http://www.justtheflight.com/ http://www.dealchecker.com/ http://www.bing.com/travel/ http://www.travelsupermarket.com/ http://www.lowfareflights.com http://www.cheapflights.com http://www.cheaptickets.com/
