the Rhone had raisins in the mid palate, nicely concentrated. The reserve Chianti was a bit thinner and had more residual sugars. Both were had with eggplant and various ripe cheeses

Sparkling or still? I've seen once if I recall and no a fellow who likes sparkling/millesimato Gavi that is a little oxidized,

What still Cortese I've experienced was bright and noticeably pineapple.

I asked a friend last night- said it's seen in some makers and is accepted in older vintages but no, not a routine "style" across the board.
FWIW

It ain't Nebbiolo. Corino is a nice but otherwise pretty cheap Alba Barbera. They make it to drink now. 2012 is going to prove itself an iffy year for Barbera.

Sure, it could sit a little but that bottle just needs to sit open for maybe an hour.
Or am I missing the sarcasm?

Phinney still is Orin Swift, and prisoner is what he sold to IIRC Constellation for $35MM. We had visited just when he sold. The story we heard is that the sale of Prisoner let him buy the winery in Maury France where most of the D66 grapes grow.

Both the D66 bottles and the prisoner bottle that was off for me were all pre-sale.
