That's so awesome. 22,000 acres is enormous. Hell, that's bigger than what George C Yount had in the 1840s and that dude even got a town named after him! Canoeing down the RR sounds like heaven, though. Hope you enjoy your tour!

I enjoy Trader Joe's Growers Reserve Chardonnay. Does this make me a senseless philistine? I know I like Spanish reds and Malbecs, but beyond that, I know nothing of wine. Any other every day whites I should try?

So i just had a bottle of this on the recommendation of the dude at the wine store, he knows I love Riesling. He said I had to try this Kerner grape and gave me the whole story. Not sure how to describe the taste or the smell other than to say it's unique to me and the bouquet is rather strong. I loved it and those of you in NYC, (viral marketing alert), I'll have some bottles at my trunk show.

Abbazia di Novacella 2004 Alto Adige Valle Isargo Kerner ($19.99)
Transparent straw color. Fresh aromas offer a tasty blend of mixed white fruits, with hints of apple, peach, grapefruit and a tropical whiff of mango. It's ripe and full in flavor, so luscious that the first sip seems sweet and almost soft, but that impression quickly gives way to tart, mouth-watering acidity and a distinct touch of peach-pit bitterness. The label claims a hefty 14% alcohol, but alcoholic heat isn't obvious in its well-balanced flavor and crisp white-fruit finish. U.S. importer: VIAS Imports, NYC. (Aug. 30, 2006)

FOOD MATCH: It has the heft to hold up to pork, veal, roast chicken or swordfish; I put it to good use with a Caprese-style summer salad of thick, ripe tomato slices layered with mozzarella, sliced avocado and thin-sliced peppered nova salmon.

VALUE: At $20, it's a bit above the line for everyday wine for most of us. It's a fine wine, though, and certainly justifies the expense if you enjoy "collecting" new varieties and regions and have yet to check a Kerner off your list; better still if you can find a vendor offering this wine in the middle to upper teens.

WHEN TO DRINK: Riesling ages well, but does this Riesling cross inherit its parent's longevity? Jancis Robinson thinks so. I have little Kerner experience to guide me, but based on the Riesling heritage and the wine's depth, power and balance, I wouldn't hesitate to put a bottle or two away in a good cellar for a few years to find out.

Kerner is one of my favorite white wines. It's hard to beat in the summertime. Unfortunately, it can be difficult to find in these parts. Hell, it wasn't exactly ubiquitous when I lived in the bay area.

Veuve Demi-Sec. Really, I don't know why I bother with bruts.

2001 Arnaldo-Caprai Sagrantino di Montefalco, 25 Anni. At ten years old, still tannic enough to take the enamel off your teeth, but starting to unclench a little. Probably needs another decade to really show it's stuff, but after sitting in a decanter for three hours, I really like this wine. Dark fruits, a tsunami of tannin, but showing lots of potential.

For those on cellartracker and who own an ipad, check-out the free cellarvu app. I've been messing around with it for a few days and its a handy, graphical, way to see your cellar.

I had a Perrusset Macon Villages last night. It was quite good. Not complex or powerful, but a really just a very nice chardonnay.

since it was 70 out yesterday, I had a French rose. I forget all other details but will take a pic of the bottle later.

Wine evenings at friends. Bottles chez nous. Tastings at our two favourite Ontario wineries. Finger Lakes reds tasting in Buffalo. Wine hour at Mansion on Delaware, Buffalo. Dinner at Tempo, Buffalo (very good food). My aching liver. The Tawse and Thirty Bench tastings were, as usual, excellent, the Finger Lakes tasting was disappointing, which makes me a little fearful of our upcoming tour. I've been warned by several people that the appelation is best for whites. We'll see. The Sea Smoke was the star of all the wines photographed. The Villacreces, Dunham Syrah and Tawse Meritage honourable runners' up. The very nice Reisling was comped to go with the fabulous Foie Gras.

97 Gaja Sperss last night from a colleagues collection. Oldest Gaja I've had. It was very nice though a little "thin" oddly... wondering if it hadn't been stored well at some point.
