I went out to pick up a Bugey to bring to a party (Bugey, is, incidentally responsible for the one and only time I ever got drunk -- I remember it being very yummy). There's only one place within a hundred miles of me that has it and they sold out yesterday morning! Someone else must like it.

Anyway, some recent things (and I reiterate that I wish we put prices on the bottles when realistic -- no need to price the '83 DRC, but it would be helpful otherwise).

This Chard we had last night -- the best sub-20 Chard I have ever had. Will now be a stocked item.

2000 Vendage-Tardives. Surprised that this did not do any more for me. It was rich up front, but lost a little midpalate, and did not have much of a finish. Got it on sale a few years ago for about $40. Was it too old? I've stored it well.

The always spectacular Merry Edwards Sauvignon. About $38.

It's nice to be drinking wine again -- I've been drinking a lot of cocktails of late, as they are cheaper for quality, but I am really enjoying wine.

Had many wines tonight. Stand outs were a '10 Kracher TBA, 09 Keefer Ranch Kosta Browne, and '10 "Gathers No Moss" by Villa Creek.

Is wine tasting really just bullshit?

No, it isn't. You have to taste the wine to figure out if you like it or not.

I kind of bounce in and out of here but most of the wine recommendations are very solid and cross all price ranges. Try a few of them to see if you like them or not. If you like them then try some of the other wines recommended by the same poster. Try some of the wines recommended by other posters. Keep trying wines. You can't get it from a book or ratings.

we had the 2006 Adanti Sagrantino di Montefalco at maialino last night. wonderful wine, full of life, tannins still present but tamed, seemed a bargain at $72. There are some other interesting finds on the wine list, you can do well with a couple of appetizers, pasta dishes and a well-priced bottle of wine.

i love that place. Agreed that you can eat extremely well with a few apps and a pasta and some wine. That never seems to happen, though.

also, Montefalco is the one Italian wine I've had meh luck with. This is based on a sample size of 4 that was 5 or 6 years ago, so of course my opinion is invalid.
