2007 Snap Dragon Cabernet Sauvignon, Sonoma

snapdragon-cab_2007.jpg

For $9.45 retail I suppose it's not too bad but I doubt I'll revisit it. Though the nose promised a spicier more aggresive body in the end that just was not the case...it was borderline fruit bomb with just enought tannin and spice to keep me drinking...either that or it was all that I had and I needed a buzz

Had three glasses of McWilliams Oz Cab. It got better as the glasses passed by...

Meh.

2007 Peller Estates Cab at a reception. Absolute dross.

Took away the flavour by opening a 2006 Clos de Val Zin when I got home. Lovely.

A bottle of Sancerre with a co-worker. I forget how much I love the Sauv. Blanc grape from the Loire Valley.

might as well post it here too. Not even a big amarone fan, but after decanting this for 2 or 3 (years) hours it really opens up.

OSAKA, Oct. 15 (AP) - (Kyodo)—The Osaka municipal government said Thursday it will sell 157 rare vintage wines through an auction next month.

The list of the wines released for the Nov. 14 auction in the Osaka World Trade Center Building includes Romanee-Conti 1921, Chateau Leoville Las Cases 1868, Chateau Margaux 1900 and Chateau Petrus 1949. Wine dealers say some of them could draw bids of over 1 million yen.

The Osaka city government bought the wines for a total of 5.65 million yen for a display at the wine museum of a cultural exchange facility that opened in 1995. But the slumping popularity of the facility forced the museum to close four years ago, leaving the vintages in the cellar since then.

"These vintages are more than mature and could be left unsold," one dealer said. "But some are truly exquisite and you can get them only through famous auctions. The Romanee-Conti could fetch 2 million yen and the Chateau Margaux more than 1 million yen."

2008 Ave permium, Torrontes, Cafayate, Argentina

Ave-Torrontes-2008.jpg

One of two bottles given to me as a thank you for a job well done. Torrontes has been fast becoming one of my fav whites and this bottle reaffirms the reasons why. It's pale yellow with glints of sage and really coats the glass! It has a very big and warm nose of yellow succulant fruits with notes of dry yellow grass and hints of wet minerality. It is mouth coating buttery wine with loads of pear and apricot balanced by tongue tinggling acidity and smooth minerality. The finish is lucious and long with an almost tannic quality. The GF and I paired this with oven roasted garlic chicken breasts, roasted potatoes and steamed broccoli and carrots! Yumm!!!

All excellent, but if ranking, it'd be Tawse, Thirty Bench, Malivoire, Esporao, Guigal.

The 2007 Tawse Cabernet Franc is one of the finest young wines I've tasted. Superb consistency, sophisticated finish, punchy tannins, great fruit. Like velvet. 93/100 CAD$40.00

Highly recommended.

The party was excellent. My wife's hosting and food, was, as usual, amazing. 10 guests, five drinking red wine!

Some nice selections. I'll have to keep an eye out for Tawse. The 30 bench looks interesting too -- I'm always in the market for a good cab franc.

Over the last 2 days (Friday/Saturday evenings) I've gone through a wine that's been in the "cellar" for about 10 years -- a 1995 Chateau Calon Segur (Bordeaux). This received rave reviews on release back in @1999. The 1995s have been overshadowed some since by some great vintages, but the reviews back then, at least for this '95, were justified. The wine was excellent and very drinkable (not as tannic as some '95s may still be).

In 2006 in NYC, the distributor for roagna decided to dump all the roagna they had at silly prices. We bought six bottles of the 1993 barbaresco reserva for around $23/bottle, a terrific bargain. We had our last bottle last night and I regret not buying a case or two. We have to write tasting notes for our web site, so I've posted it here. Not sure if tasting notes are appropriate in this thread, if anyone objects, I'll edit the post:

The Rogna family motto "Roagna does not change." is reflected in this traditionally-styled wine. More feminine and complex than the Roagna Barolos of the same year, we find vilolets, cherries with a hint mushrooms and funk on the nose. Palate followed nose with beautiful layers of cherries, truffles and a hint of orange peel. The nebbiolo's tannins and acidity have resolved to a beautiful, soft mouth feel. If you're holding any of this in your cellar, it's not going to get better than this.

Awesome notes, wish I had some myself. Rogana has always been a go-to producer for me, but prices have not been to favorable (and now I see why). Even their Dolcetto is around $20 from my store.
