On sale for $49.95! FTW!

Heard a few grumblings in reviews but I think it a super wine.

Yep, t he orvieto was Antinori indeed. I think you hit the nail on the head regarding the risotto wine combo.

Rapitala has some interesting wines. One I have been interested in trying is "Hugonis" which is 50% Nero D'Avola and 50% cabernet sauv.

I was thisclose to just picking up the same Orvieto at the store I frequent, but I have to buy a bunch of food for a small labor day gathering at my place and I need the budget room for Prosciutto.

I did, however, pick up some Le Volte. These are the 2 reds I'll be serving on Monday:

they sell it at the store next to me. I've always eyed it, but $50 is pushing it into Barbaresco/Lange territory.

What year is that le volte? I can't make it out in the picture? 50 beans a bottle is a large markup especially since the retailer is paying $15-20 a bottle.

it's the 2007, I've only had the 2006 so I'll be interested to see how this one fares.

And yeah, it's quite the markup. But I live in NYC, I'd rather have a store with a great selection and higher prices than a tiny store with just Bolla and Cavit.

I am totally with you on the liquour store point, I was just surprised at the markup since I seldom pay retail for the wines I drink. Where is your wine store located?

the place I like closet to me is at 90th and Third Ave, they're the one with the Hugonis. They're usually quite fair on prices, every store has their margin bottles. The other place I like is KD Wine at 95th and Madison. Really great selection (see their website) with a focus first on French and then on Italians. Prices are generally fair for NYC too.

Where can I go to get wines below retail????

it's mostly due to rent. Space is at a premium. Also, liquor prices tend to be controlled quite strictly, something like Jim Beam or Jack Daniels is usually prices the same no matter what store (there are some exceptions). Complicating the whole thing is the fact that the profit margin on most spirits is slim, a couple of bucks per bottle at most. Same thing for the big name wines like Yellow Tail, Cavit, Beauliu, Franciscan, Sterling, etc. The profits on these is minimal for a store, so to compensate they'll have a few bottles that are priced higher to make more money.

I pass KD everday on my way home from work but never stopped in, but I have heard about it from customers. When you are in the restaurant business you can drink great wine for very reasonable prices.

ah, do you work or live in the area? I used to live at 93rd and Lex. but I moved down below 86th back in June. I still make the trek up for KD when I can, and then I get pizza at Luzzo's on 96th.

Also, stop in next time, they're having a big clearance of Louis Jadot burgundy, bottles that were $28-30 are now $11-15.
