humbling experience

so, I bought this precor treadmill, used, my company renovated the gym and I bought one of the old machines cheap. not the point of the story

so, I have to get this thing back home, weights 300 pounds and is 80 inches long. I'm honestly thinking that I get one guy to help me and no problem at all to carry it up a flight of stairs. anyway, I go to pick it up, and its totally beyond me - the weight distribution and the way its shaped pretty much make it impossible for me to pick up.

so, this guy who works in the factory offers to bring it in for a little money. this guy is about 55, maybe 60. he's no more than 150 pounds, could be as little as 130 pounds. he shows up with one of his buddies, no bigger or younger than him and they carry it in like its an ikea dinner room chair.

made me feel like a huge pussy.

No big deal. As (I think) Thomas was alluding to, he does this regularly so knows how to pick it up, carry it, etc.. Anyways, did this guy know you could kill him with a Norris-style snarl?

But if it helps, speaking of running, I get similar feelings of inadequacy everytime I check out the 50+ age group finish times for local 10K runs!

I was finishing a local 5K a few years back, started a bit fast and was struggling to hold it together during the last 200m (which were on a track), and I got passed - out-kicked, really - by twin grey-haired ladies, one on either side. 100m to go, and I could not catch them.

oh, I didn't really take it to heart. but its funny, you work out every now and again, but these guys who carry stuff all day every day are just phenominally strong and good and lifting things. there's no comparison.

When I was younger ( a lot younger) I used to move racks of power amplifiers and didn't think much of it. I recently moved a granite countertop into one of the first floor apts of one of our buildings (64 x 28 x 1-3/4") and I thought I was going to die. Getting old sucks- pass the oatmeal.

same thing happened to me at an ikea once. i had to load a box with a bed frame in it and it was waaaaay too heavy for me. because the box was so long i figured it was a 2 man job, and i asked one of the lot attendants to help me. he was a very short, skinny man in his 60s. so we walk over to pick up the box, he gives a dirty look, snarls, and picks the thing up by himself, carries it to my car on his shoulder, and loads it by himself. i felt like a girl.
