can i orphan the suit jacket and pair it with anything, say, grey pants and black shoes and not look like an idiot around the office? i'm a soon to be first-year lawyer at a giant corporate law firm. the pinstripes are grey and very subtle (only visible from fairly close up).

or do i leave this in the closet to be resurrected when i join the mafia?

To follow the rules:

- black is for funeral
- pinstripe is for office

...this should be the ideal suit for the funeral of someone from your office.

Unfortunately for you, wearing an orphaned pin-stripe jacket is even more vilified on this forum than wearing a black suit is. You will need to wear it as a suit or not at all, though the jacket may look okay with jeans in a casual setting.

Since it's pin-stripe it's not as bad as a plain black suit, I doubt anyone you work with will be as anal about this kind of thing as us...

You may be looked down upon by SFers, but lets be honest... We are a rare breed. The majority of people would not bat an eye if they saw someone wearing a black suit, let alone a black pinstripe suit...

If it is a good fabric and fits very well, just wear it. The color is not ideal but far from fatal (pun intended). Success as an odd jacket is about one in 25. It will all depend on cut, fit and how well your individual style allows you to pull it off.

+1000. Especially if you've spent some money on the suit AND if the suit fits you well. Most people won't judge you for wearing a black pinstripe suit to work.

Just wear it and ignore this place. Some people get too worried about "rules" - which are not even valid in the first place.

Unhelpful to say the very least.

I think a black pinstripe is quite different than a black suit. I actually rather like black Pinstripes and Chalkstripes. It's a very powerful look though.....especially in 3 piece.

**** the rules. I love black pinstripe suits...I have two. I also have a plain black suit. I wear it to court when I want opposing counsel to realize they are dead in the water.

As others have posted, if the suit fits well, then wear it. I wouldn't wear the jacket as an odd jacket though.
