Damn, I thought this post would be about some Humboldt County redneck going medieval on the guy who stole his crop.

Sorry to hear... This guy who works at the homeless shelter I help out at used to steal plants from people's houses, supermarkets, etc and than landscape his drug dealer's house in order to feed his drug habit...

Replace with cacti.

Or, if you live in a metro area, poison ivy. The thief might not be able to recognize it.

Try hanging an old/used wasp nest around your plants and potted trees, that should deter anyone from stealing them.

How high is your balcony off ground level? Sounds pretty interesting. If you live in a state that has a castle law you can kill him without issue. Goodluck.

+1 on the cacti. Get those bunny ear things, the needles hurt like hell and are impossible to get out of your hands. As an added bonus, they produce nice fruit as well, so they'll compensate for the loss of your straw/raspberries.
