Why did they have to make up a name that contains the word "twit"? Twittering sounds like doing an action characteristic of twits.

Precisely!

I also sometimes think of twit as resembling tit, and in that case, I wholly endorse the concept of tittering.

I saw Twitter founder/ceo or something like that saying in an interview that it felt "powerful" to be him right now. And his name is Biz Stone. On principal alone I'll never use it.
