Hey guys,

So idiotically I decided to live off campus, and didn't realize that there was no furniture involved. Now im stuck, broke, without furniture. I realize that one cheap way to sleep is on a tatami. So do any of you have any online retailers that would sell tatami? Physical stores? Please help, broke college student

When I was in student housing and too cheap to buy a real mattress, I found an inflatable mattress to be an acceptable alternative, running about $40 CDN or so. Just a heads up you might want to check one out.

I slept on one for about three months. Not great, but when you're broke, it may be the best alternative.

Hammock? Pick a corner, find a couple of studs with the proper distance between, attach heavy duty eye-screws.

You could use a lobster trap for a coffee table.

Just start looking for other students who are probably moving out of their off campus housing at all different times throughout the summer, unless you are in a location where all the off campus apartments are all rented on one year leases starting and ending in May. You should be able to get at least a dresser for free, if not a crappy couch and bedframe and who knows what else. And if not free, then very cheap.

Tatami are not that comfortable. Whenever I slept on one I still had a futon under me to make it livable.

+1. You don't sleep on a tatami mat, you sleep on a futon, on a tatami mat.

Futons are pretty cheap, and inflatable mattresses (as has been suggested) are even cheaper.

I don't what retailers use to transport cartons/bottles of milk in the US, but in Australia, we use plastic crates that are about 2 ft x 2ft x 2ft, called milk crates. It's a time-honoured college/university tradition to "borrow" as many crates as possible from the back of local shops. The milk crates are then used for a wide variety of things in student housing - holding up planks for a makeshift bed; part of a home-made bookcase; stools; the underpinnings of a very dodgy couch; and a whole range of other things. Really, the only limit to what can be done with a few milk crates is your imagination! Great for cheap furniture.

Go to a military surplus place and get a sleeping bag and foam camping pads.
