Why does a bar mitzvah get like 4-5 times as much? I get that its a big day and becoing a man and all, but shit, it's 13 year old kids giving $100 gifts... Bit OTT?

once in a lifetime thing, and the party costs a fortune. the idea is that the money should go towards university or something big.

I really think it depends on the gender. Girls expect more, and they make a way bigger deal out of their birthday. Saying that I only spend 30 max on a gift for a friend's kid. If the kid is extremely attached to me I will break my rule sometimes.

20-30 for friends' kids. Before age 3, some of the kids were more interested in the wrapping and packaging than the actual toy.

A teaching moment for the kid's parents, no?

I can appreciate that it's once in a lifetime and coming of age / becoming a man, but I guess I feel it's excessive.

Obviousily it's a cultural thing and I'm not questioning other people's choices, but by virtue of some kid being in the same class as my kid, do I really have to contribute $100 to this kids college fund (I know I dont really and it's not a set amount, but I'm asking from a social protocol perspective).

edit: I've realised it's a bit of a silly post as I'm sure different cultures have their own various coming of age celebrations for which they may present similar gifts. Guess I'm thinking of my own youth and I went to a bunch of friend's barmitzvahs. I dont remember what I gave, but I wonder if my parents forked out an absurd amount in gifts when I was 13.

$80 is pretty damn excessive... I'd say $30 is good.

$10-$30
The actual amount is somewhat random having to do with what we happen to find at the moment we're looking, not how good a friend is the celebrant.

sorry, no, let me clarify - I would say if a kids classmate has a bar mitzva and you aren't jewish, then give like you would to a normal birthday. when I do to a bar mitzvah its usually a family member or a good friends kid. in a few years I'll have 20 bar mitzvahs in a year, and then I sure as hell wont give 100 bucks a pop

Ok, that makes a lot more sense.

I was seeing a scenario where your kid turns 13 and for the next year you are forking out a couple of hundred bucks a month in gifts.

Depends on how close the friend is, but around ~30$ should be fine.

I guess depends on how old the "kid" is. I thought a brand new game will cost you more than 50 dollar these days anyway (which I would imagine is what a 12/13 years old want). At 7, I don't know, how much does a lego set cost these days?

As for girls, how much does huge stuff animal and doll cost these days?

No idea what these things cost. I dont have kids and rarely buy toys for kids. That's why I was so surprised.

well, this one says 40 dollars. Guess, unless we head to Wal-Mart kids toys are not cheap anymore these days.

If it's a boy under the age of 12 you can just get a supersoker or nerf gun and your set.
