My car was broken into. How could this happen?

On my way to the grocery today I noticed my GPS and iPhone radio transmitter were gone. I always lock my doors, but sometimes I leave the windows cracked. I just reported this to the police, even though I am sure nothing will come of it. I lost $220 worth of stuff. I'm most angry at the thought that from now on, when i get a new GPS, I'll have to hide it every time I park, and can no longer leave my windows cracked.

I do worry about someone putting an arm in and stealing something, so I only crack them .5 in. Not even a child can put a hand in that. Yet someone was able to get in my locked car, take the two items, and leave the $60 cash I left in the cup holder. The car was not damaged in any way. How could they do it?

GPS units are the #1 item stolen from cars. I don't have one and even I know that.

Sorry to hear. Ever heard the aphorism, "When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth." More than likely you forgot to lock the doors on this occasion, OR a door malfunctioned and didn't lock, OR your locks are accesible to a coathanger through the .5" crack, OR your GF has your stuff, OR it was stolen at a different time than you suppose. Others would occur to me if it was not 2:00am eastern. ~ H

You left a GPS, ipod and cash in plain view in your car with the windows cracked and you don't know how your car could have gotten broken into? Dude, are you "special"? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FR-YsDkLdi0 Or, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ZiKT...eature=related

Slim jim, or maybe some packaging strap. Depends on the car.

I don't know where you live, but if you leave a single quarter in plain site in NYC, somebody will throw a rock at your window to get to it. We never ever ever leave anything of value in plain site. My gf's car was broken into the very first week we moved to NYC, and all she had was a GPS mount attached to the windshield.

My wife's car has been broken into 6 times in the last 3 years. The first time they took a radio and an amp. Then the car was marked. They broke in a few more times and didn't take anything b/c nothing was in the car for them to take. Then the fifth time they stole the airbags! Then the sixth time they took the radio again even though the faceplate wasn't in the car!!!!! Now, there's just a big hole where the radio goes and it's stayed that way. Haven't been broken into since.

I was an FM transmitter, not an ipod. I've left my GPS and/or mount in plain view when I park at home for the past 4 years without incident. I only ever hid everything when I was in LA or shady neighborhoods. I leave my windows cracked to get some fresh air in. If I bring home a pizza or something and just lock everything up, the smell is still in there the next day. Camrys are pretty air tight. I just would have assumed they have solved all the usual slim jim/coathanger tricks in newer cars. You cant even break in vending machines these days.

Fuck! That just fucking blows. It pisses me off when your car is broken into for no fucking reason. It's 200 bucks out of your pocket and the fucking thief didn't even take a dime. Actually, I'm convinced that there are two fuckers on bikes that break into cars in the area. One acts as the lookout, the other breaks the window and grabs whatever is within his reach.

.5" is large enough for someone to stick a wire hanger through the space and unlock the doors. You got off easy.

So I come out of my house one rainy day about a month ago to find a very large towel (almsot a blanket) sticking out of the driver side door. The window was jimmyed using an apple juice bottle. It was the one time I left my GPS visable, I usually just remove it from the sucction cup on the windshield but I forgot this time. Luckily the angle of my car made it too difficult for the thief to get to the unit, but the door is screwed up and I'm going to have to pay about $100 to get it lined up and pushed in correctly.

Reggs, sorry to hear about your loss. Having stuff get stolen sucks.
