Like the inclines and rowing machines.

The rest not so much.

But I am old and feeble.

I love almost everything, except:

I don'tlike their chest machines.

Their seated biceps curl and triceps extension machines need better range of motion - more comparable to what flex and life fitness (which they own) provide.

their shoulder press machine is akward:

I've used it quite often and know it is popular, but 9 times out of 10 I'll opt for other shoulder exercises, including other more comfortable (read: emphasis on shoulders, not easy) machine brands.

Why not just use free weights?

1. variety
2. injury prevention/recovery
3. some of these machines are damn good, and offer ranges of movement free weights don't give

Help me to understand this...

Appendages that are... unfettered... cannot follow the same motion as those that are bound to the path of a machine?

Negative.

Unfettered? Is an appendage unfettered when it has a weight in its hand?

Take a look at that shoulder machine a few posts up. Can you replicate that movement with a free weight? You can mimic the movement with your body, but can you do it with a weight?

I stick with dumbbells. Every now and then I'll throw one in for a change of pace but I usually end up disappointed.

I'm honestly not sure when the last time I used a machine was. Actually, I think I did some lat pulldowns a while ago when I was too lazy to do chins.

I thought this would be the thread where kunk would post his oft-requested video, self-titled "Hammer Strength"

That doesn't say much for necessity.
