Travelling in Central Asia

I'd like to go to Central Asia, any of the 'stans would be cool, but Turkmenistan especially appeals to me. However, I know some people in Uzbekistan and from what cursory reading I've done, that is a very big plus. And Islam Karimov is one of the more, uh, interesting world leaders.

Does anyone have any advice or stories to tell? It would be around September or October. I've seen the Silk Route Project blog before, not sure how much things have deteriorated in three years.

If you haven't already, read Robert D. Kaplan's books. He's travelled all through there. I really want to do the same thing (but a bit more easterly), have it planned for Spring 2011.

Thanks!

Where you thinking about going? I'd like to go to western China. The current state of affairs there has me putting that on hold. Plus I'm sick of China.
