My GF's uncle has a bottle of Louis XIII on the shelf in his living room, it looks really tacky.

You should talk to your GF's uncle. A bottle of Louis deserves better than a tacky living room IMO.

Buying it by the glass in a restaurant I couldn't imagine.

But for special times at home, maybe. It looks like you've put enough of a dent into your baccarat bottle's contents to have formed an opinion.

The bottle was a gift. I really don't think I'd pay that for cognac. You do know you are drinking something exceedingly special though. For me, I will always remember the bottle being opened. Others have read this, but as you probably didn't:

I had some close friends to a private room at a favorite establishment, that allows BYOB in the private room. We had a ton of great wine and three expensive bottles of Scotch. This Louis was to be the high point of the night. The som opened it, as the cork was starting to crumble a bit. He used the "butler's friend" style cork remover. When he got the bottle opened, the entire area was suddenly pervaded with a warm, brown sugar/molasses smell. I got the first sip, and it was all that plus vanilla, caramel, and more. Smooth, smooth, smooth.

There's also Hardy Perfection, which is $6000 a bottle. I saw someone order three shots of it for $650 per shot at CityZen in DC. The relative markup on that is actually much lower than the bottom shelf stuff, though of course the absolute markup is incredible. If you think about how if the producer had instead sold that cognac 150 years ago and invested the money, the price becomes more fair. I used a compound interest calculator and assuming that they could have sold the bottle for $40 150 years ago, it would only require an APR of 3.4%, to make it worth $6000 today. But in terms of taste, I doubt it's really a good value. It probably tastes worse than a 50 year old bottle.

My friends and I bought my buddy a shot for his birthday a few months ago at ruth's chris.... he obviously enjoyed it but said next time just buy him a few beers and bring that 1k to the strip club.

I'm glad you liked it, but reading your post and even seeing how much you appreciate fine spirits I would agree with you that it's not too pragmatic to blow $1,000 on a single shot of this.

I would even call it a waste...was it well worth it though? Im not a big liquor drinker so my opinion may seem elementary.
