Good god people, he's 18, probably never had a job before, and just wants to get his foot in.

Just starting out, yes it's very important. Especially as far as filling in employment gaps that you'd have to explain during an interview, where likely no explanation is going to be good enough anyway.

I understand your point, and it is well taken. I might offer however that an entry level position, especially in the current economy, where traditional entry level candidates are competing with 30 year old down sizers, is most likely anything BUT inconsequential...

I would hope the OP once achieving a track record wouldnt fabricate-- I just think there was an undertone that considered future lies almost a certainty.
