People on Yelp: Why do you all suck?

Also, as I said, apparently a material number of these cheapo folks want extra for free and get upset when they don't get it. My friend that owns a couple of upscale places says it's always someone they've never seen before too. So basically, not going to be a repeat customer, wants something for free, bad Yelp when they dont get it.

I think sometimes people forget that businesses, while designed to cater to customer wants/needs, only really exist to provide a living for someone who is not the customer.

i know what you're saying, but i'd also say that businesses that remember that often don't last too long. chefs may regard themselves as artists, and a few of them may be, but they are still in a service industry. As God says, "the customer isn't always right, but the customer is always the customer."

Agreed. It's annoying when restaurants refuse to be accommodating. It's at odds with the cornerstone of service. There is a differnce between being accommodating and giving away the house though.

I'm a server, so I was thinking more along the lines of people who come in for happy hour, don't spend much money, and stay through dinner. They obviously like the business, but they are hurting it at the same time.

Suffice it to say, everyone should strive to be gracious and considerate of others.

Leave a bad review during restaurant week if you want...but start it with "We went here for the restaurant week menu..."

If the restaurant can't handle offering decent service and food during restaurant week, they are free to not participate. If they can't provide kind service or have to cut so many corners that the food sucks, it might still reflect poorly on them overall, and at the very least, if you are someone who enjoys restaurant week, it will tell you which places to avoid.

People don't just complain about service.  It is also about the food quality, without realizing that what they are eating is not typical of what is normally served. A dinner for $30 isnt the same as a $100 dinner? Shocking.

It's also, as Piobaire points out, that a lot of these people, especially during restaurant week, don't know what they are talking about. I've usually found restaurant week menus to be as well-prepared as anything the restaurant does. The dishes are typically something the restaurant offers anyway, although the portions are often smaller. It's not like Le Gavroche is suddenly going to offer a special menu featuring tater tots and beanie weenies.

But often, people are trying new things during restaurant week and, so, make moronic comments instead of treating it as a learning experience. Yes, I know the pasta at Olive Garden is softer and I'm sorry you didn't like ours. But, no, our pasta isn't "undercooked". It's supposed to be that way.

That Mitchell & Webb thing about the bad waiter is supposed to be a joke, but there is a lot of truth in it, too.

Just read a quote from Aschatz and I'm sure this will diner will give him a bad Yelp:

Had a table last night that didn't enjoy aspects of the Next: the French Laundry 1996 menu. Their biggest complaint-the food was dated. Hmmm
