Purchase a used Quattroporte

I am considering purchasing a used Maserati Quattroporte. I like the Executive GT edition and would buy one about 2 years old; so either a 2007 this year or a 2008 in early 2010. Any QP owners who might point out the pluses or minuses of the QP; either the Sport or Executive versions?
Would anyone buy a newer or older car given the depreciation?

If you're poor enough to worry about depreciation, I'd be worried about maintenance costs. May as well buy a VW Phaeton, which would probably be half the price and will basically be like servicing an audi. Anyway, though not yet in a position to buy a luxury car (or any car), I would be loath to buy a new car just for the reason of the immediate depreciation. MAy as well get something 1-3 years old, with pretty low mileage and much more reasonable cost. Buy yourself a watch with the $10K your technically saving.

I'm not an owner but much has been written about the poor transmission in the first of the new model line QP a couple of years ago. The new tranny is apparently much better. Just to be aware.

iirc, the new trans came out in 2007 as a 2008?

Makes no sense at all

Generally people with money are more careful with it than those without.

I know I'm a smalltimer buying a used QP! But you can purchase a 2 year old low mileage car for about half of a new one and with the CPO programs you can extend the warranty for 2 year/50K miles. There seem to be plenty of them out there. I think the transmission and clutch issues were resolved by '07.

I also tend to buy clothes on sale without the warranty, of course.

If you buy one used, then I'd suggest a car that is no more than 2-3 years old so that there is plenty of the original warranty left on it. Good luck.

I know of a new DB tuxedo in midnight that has a lifetime warranty and comes fully loaded. Stop by on your way to Luxury Motors.

Ah, Chris, a DB midnight blue Tux would be worth paying full price! It would look great in a Burgundy Maserati QP.

Nice car, and it looks great in burgundy. The new dealership here suggests there's a market for the car in these parts. It also makes owning one here a lot better since it can be serviced here. Enjoy your car.

Beautiful, gas guzzlers!
Clutches are the weak point though. Other than that its a great car.

I really want a Qporte too, just terrified of the maintenance costs. There's just some things that warranties don't cover, and I don't know if I want to foot the service on what is essentially a Ferrari (which would be daily driver at that)...

Maserati has some dealer incentives right now that are bringing the prices on 2009 models down considerably from 'MSRP' by about $20-25K. I am tempted but the incentives should become reflected in the used market fairly soon as well.

As far as maintenance, if you buy an duoselect transmission which phased out in 2007, you can expect to replace the clutch every 15-20K miles. That is a $5K job.

I have an '05 'base' QP which I bought early last year. Maserati servicing costs haven't been too horrendous (original owner said never to go to a third party dealer as they can screw things up more than fix it, and I've taken his advice) and while clutch, discs, etc have needed replacing there's been nothing out of the ordinary for a reasonable-mileage car with Italian build, which you're trying to use as an almost-daily driver (although yeah, it would give a Toyota/Honda driver a heart attack).

I had a test run in a QP around 2007 and I would recommend that you do a proper test of the car before you buy. The transmission was terrible, but as stated earlier in the thread they fixed this.
