Resistance training for shoulder/neck pain

I have been dealing with pretty persistent pain and stiffness/cracking/grinding in my left shoulder to the neck for some time now. I went to see an MD, was prescribed Arthro-Tec, and promptly stopped taking it because of the gastro-intestinal side effects.

About the only thing that makes me feel normal is upper-body work, esp. bench/incline/shoulder presses. For about 48-72 hours after a session, the pain and stiffness are gone. Running also helps somewhat. I don't work out that often, but would like to.

My question: am I at risk of further destroying whatever is wrong there, or is exercise actually helping resolve the issue?

Without knowing what's wrong, no one can say if you are further damaging the area. With the cracking/grinding sounds it may likely be arthritis as the neck is one of the first areas it develops.

Arthrotec is basically a stronger aspirin/ibuprofen and these are actually one of the first line treatments of arthritis.

Weight training has shown positive effects on people with arthritis.

I would discuss this matter further with your physician and let him know the side effects you ar eexperiencing from the meds.
