Is Craigslist safe? - Page 2

I found both my summer sublet and my normal residence through CL. And sold some furniture on it. Bought a pair of really nice temporary speakers (NHT 2.9) for the summer. It's no more or less safe than the newspaper classifieds are (were), even though the barrier to entry is lower.

Yeah that's just bad advice. I've known a lot of people who found nice places using craigslist.

+1. My current place was found through CL, and chances are my next one will be as well.

You can sell just about anything on CL, too. The adage "one man's trash is another man's treasure" is never more true than on CL.

I listed something, and within 30 minutes, I got an email from someone trying to scam me.

I post rental ads on Craigs. Nobody looks at the newspapers anymore, which is fine by me. Craigslist is free to post; newspaper classifieds are not.

Craigslist is great for renting apartments and for selling stuff with local pickups. Have had good experiences with both.

Whether you're selling anything on Craigs List or Kijiji, don't take money orders from anyone. It's become a massive industry to hustle people with fake money orders. I have one friend who uses sites like these once in a blue moon to sell stuff, and has had people try to scam him on 5 different occasions, luckily he knows what they're trying so he doesn't fall for it.

Many times these money orders clear the bank, and only after 5 days or so the bank informs you it's fake and no good once they figure it out themselves.

Usually these hustlers will send you foreign money orders, they'll make up some dumb story about how they are moving back and forth between places to try and explain it. The other scam they put hand in hand with this is to overpay you. If you're selling something for $300, they'll "accidentally" send you a money order for $800. They'll then say there was some silly mix-up, ask you to wire them back $400 via western union and keep $100 for your trouble. They specifically ask for western union because it's impossible to get your money back this way.

I've gotten cufflinks, concert tickets, furniture, etc from craigslist. I've found my first apartment through it as well. I've sold furniture through craigslist. That being said, I am hyper-conservative about transactions and dealings with other people.

Just be transparent and communicative. Let anything you sell be under the conditions that whoever comes over and pays for it, the item is theirs.

Craigslist is very good, but on one note. I think this past month, some guy would post stuff o craigslist, people come, he murders. But mostly it's all good. Got my xbox flashmodded from craigs.

Yeah I read a post on CL about some guy who posted an apt for rent, and people would show up and he would rob them.

Otherwise, I guess it's legit. I've done some deals with Craig and they all worked out

OK, you got me - I have zero first-hand (or second-hand) experience in the matter. I'm going more on the media reports of people showing up for a viewing, seeing an amazing place, agreeing to write a check for first-month's deposit, and then the guy vanishing.

There have also been anecdotes of stick-ups, rapes, etc. when prospective buyers/renters turn up for appointments...EDIT: as mentioned above.
