Is Craigslist safe?

I want to sell a few things and I am wondering if Craigslist is the way to go. Should I only accept money orders? What shipping service should I use?

In my experience craigslist is typically used for local sales, where people pick up the items your selling, pay in cash, and no shipping is involved. If you want to sell nationally ebay is probably a better way to go.

+1 I've always had good experiences with Craigslist, but I've only dealt with local sales, and I only accept cash. Sticking with this policy has kept me from having any trouble so far.

When I agree on a deal and the buyer wants to meet somewhere out of my way, I ask for a small deposit via paypal. Saves the trouble of having to deal with a buyer that "just so happens" to not have the full amount of agreed upon cash on him.

local cash sales only. I have cleaned out my garage 2 x times and one office with great success selling everything from desks, anvils, weights and birdhouses to artwork, crystal, lamps and golf clubs. All cash and carry. When people ask to pay with cashiers checks or to have you ship, it usually is a scam.

Don't look for renters or an apartment on Craigslist either.

I had a very good experience buying a nearly new NAD stereo receiver on a Craiglist-type site for audio enthusiasts.

+1 In fact, that's how I found the place I'm in now, and it's been an overall good experience. Any complaints I do have are completely unrelated to finding the place on Craigslist.
