Those Berkeley idiots don't know a damned thing.
Fructose is God made natural and can never harm you. It's Glucose (man-made) that causes all the problems.

I can't tell if you're being facetious or not.

Here's a great video of UCSF Professor talking about the role of sugars in the 'obesity epidemic' of the past couple of decades. Early on, he debunks the lipid hypothesis and shifts the focus to sugar.

41 minutes in he goes through, in detail, the differences between the way the fructose and glucose is metabolized.

I haven't found a more accessible and easily-understandable explanation of fructose and glucose metabolism. This part starts about 40 mins in.

It's worth the watch:

That speaker gets a lot wrong for how bombastic the speech itself is. I can only handle so much 'YOU' and 'WE'. It's pretty good overall, but it would be a lot better as hard substantive information instead of using the information to paint things as 'good' or 'bad'. Stuff that's wrong or misleading: - AGEs and browning Many endogenous AGEs and many more exogenous AGEs are not causative of atherosclerosis. - Leptin Leptin is not solely produced by the liver and dietary carbohydrates are not the sole stimulator of leptin. White adipose tissue stimulates more leptin production than hepatic tissue, and other parts of the body (stomach and some brown adipose tissue) produce leptin as well. - Ghrelin Speaker makes ghrelin out to be the sole appetite hormone and that's far from the truth. - Ethanol It's not a carbohydrate and it's not metabolized by the brain. Big :wtf: moment. - 'Aldehydes are bad' :wtf: Glucose is an aldehyde. - Uric acid is 'bad' Another reason why I hate terms like 'bad' and 'good'. Uric acid has many beneficial biological functions and is necessary for human metabolic functions, which is why low and high plasma concentrations are associated with many disorders.

Should be required viewing for nutrition noobs who think fat is bad but eat tubs of 'whole grain' pasta and drink their 32 oz fruit smoothie and then sit around all day on their Macs looking up new curl routines.

Lots of evidence links AGEs and progression of atherosclerosis. He says that leptin is a hormone from fat cells at 8:11. Insulin regulation of leptin overshadows any stimulation from glucorticoids or whatever. Ghrelin so what. It plays a bigger role than orexin, NPY, which respond similarly to glucose/fructose as ghrelin. Don't expect a 1 hour public health talk to cover everything. Ethanol yeah that was.. odd. He's trying too hard to draw an analogy - hey we regulate this toxic carbohydrate ethanol, why not fructose? But ethanol is metabolized by the brain to FAMEs. Doesn't cause the effects he was talking about but people slip up when giving live talks. You know what he meant by aldehydes. When talking to layman, sometimes you have to say x is good y is bad. He came off rather pompous. The "ok?, ok." and rhetorical questions are annoying.
