longest you have ever gone without sleep?

Thread Starter
recently i have had some mild insomnia, and while talking with a friend about it i remembered a story from school. at the end of my 2nd semester of my 2nd year i had a particularly grueling studio schedule and i ended up staying awake working on a final presentation from 7am on monday morning until 11am on thursday morning, which should be 76 hours. i remember walking across campus to my apartment and being so out of it i couldn't think something without saying it aloud. i slept for close to 24 hours afterward and still wasn't back to normal for a week. so what is the longest you've ever gone without any sleep?

About 45 hours. I didn't eat a whole lot during that time and I remember throwing up a few times.

I once wasn't able to sleep on an airplane.

I have never successfully slept on an airplane. I think I have gone about three days. I regularly go for 24-48 without sleep. I am not healthy or normal, so I wouldn't recommend this.

A friend and I did 40 hours to see who could make it. We both did. I thought it'd be harder. We now trying to plan and do 2 all-nighters in a row + a full day not sleeping.

Sleep deprivation is very bad for your resistance.

^ Resistance?

My personal record is somewhere around 102-106 hours. I do not recommend the experience. (I had insomnia for 3 years, and this single 100+ hour spell was the only time that I went more than 60 hours without sleep. Unfortunately, I had a LOT of 48-60 hour periods without sleep.) I think the "bad for your resistance" comment refers to your immune system being very vulnerable when your body does not have sufficient sleep.

Possibly 4 days, on several occasions, during my combat days.

Precisely. My doctor says it's much easier to catch a cold when you're sleep deprived.

Around 80 hours. I slept for about 10 hours afterwards and awoke still completely exhausted. Wouldn't do it again.

How? I've heard stories of people in the army being kept awake for 2-3 days on training and things but 80 hours...

I've done 50 hours a bunch of times, and, for 6 weeks in a row once I got less than two hours sleep from sunday to thursday every week, total. and then slept all weekend. but I was a lot younger then.
