What is the purpose of the "Introduce Yourself" thread?

The first few pages have some interesting intros from well-established members, but after that there's just thousands of pages of "Hi. I'm x from y" posted by members with less than 5 posts. I don't think anyone reads it. So what's that all about?

Its a place where new members introduce themselves by saying who they are and where they are from. Not every thread can be a Moo Foo Manton three way.

As someone who recently posted there, I did so because of the box that hangs around suggesting you post there if you have a non-positive post count.

Maybe if new posters were required to post there first it would negate spammers. Maybe not.
