I use Gatsby spikey edge right now. It's probably the best product I've ever used although the only downside is it's hard to wash out. What do you guys recommend for thick hair?

I used to use Murray's and American Crew products, but recently switched to Axe products for several reasons.

1) Murray's was too greasy and caused my forehead to break out.

2) Murray's melts in the heat and runs down your face.

3) I got tired of paying $15 for American Crew products.

4) Axe is less than $5 at Wal Mart.

5) Axe hair products work really well, despite the completely annoying ads and douches who use their bodysprays.

I have their clean look (purple), their messy look (yellow), and their spiked look (red) products. They all do what they say they do well. In fact, they work so well that my g/f, who worked at a salon for years, even uses them to style her hair upon occasion.

Although I always enjoyed the looks from other shoppers in the "ethnic" hair care section when I was buying Murray's. And the comments I got from my black friends when they discovered I used it too

This is the last time I will ever support anything by Axe. But it's worth it.:

You should check out Murray's Superlight. I've taken to using it the day after I shampoo, then rinse well with hot water a night after. If you do this, most of the oil will wash out and leave most of the wax in your hair. This is a beneficial buildup that makes styling very easy with any product for the preceding days.

Murray's original is ok, if only I could figure out how to wash it off my hands.

I used to shampoo just a few times a week, and on shampoo days I would use Murray's Original, and on the days I didn't shampoo I used Superlight to touch up. I've since changed hairstyles and don't use Murray's stuff anymore, but that stuff is great for the clean slick look that you see in a lot of Ralph Lauren ads. Right now I use TIGI's bedhead manipulator for my faux hawk. Considering changing hairstyles again.

Does Murray make a cheap wax instead of pomade? (does anyone have recommendations on finding a wax product that doesn't cost more than $15-20?)

+1 on Gatsby

I have tried 3 of their products [all wax/matte style] and they have been the best hair products I've ever tried [and trust me I've tried MANY]. It is easier to spread than American crew fiber/wax, the smell is fairly neutral. Huge plus is that it's half the price of American crew and other brands you find in beauty stores. The only places I've found this stuff was at a small little Japanese market on Newbury st. boston and this Marukai market here in San Diego. I'm sure you can find this stuff online somewhere.

I have had no trouble with the grease or sweating out, yet axe doesn't hold my hair. Its odd how different products have different results on peoples hair.

A lot of people use it for a clean style but i just run it through my hair for a messy look.

I don't understand how is gatsby good? The hold is way too much, its hard to wash out and it makes my hair look limp.

Aveda, shiseido or bumble&bumble are my preferred choices.

Initially, the "messy look" didn't hold my hair, but the spiked and clean look pomades both did. The spiked is tacky while the clean look just kinda holds my hair well when I put it in.

My hair stylist, who I've had for 10 years and is leaving the business (argh!) said I wasted my money on the Aveda, and I would be happy with American Crew Fiber, which costs about 1/3.

This was interesting to me, because he works at a fancy Beverly Hills salon, where you expect them to hawk the more high-priced products. Yet, perhaps since he's leaving the business, he feels it's time to set people straight.

Anyone else use American Fiber?

I'm a big fan of TIGI bedhead manipulator. I have stupid thick hair and medium length (although when it's longer I don't use anything), and I tend to go for a messy parted look. Not the super slicked back comb job, but somewhere along those lines. The bed head does what it sounds like, makes your hair a bit heavier and stay in place, while still being able to run your fingers through it and move it around, like you have that thick, oily bed head in the morning, but minus the oily part. Only downside is that it is like $16 for 2 ounces. I think my hairdresser uses American Crew cream, and I've got a haircut on Tuesday so I'm probably going to ask her about a few things.

If the hold is too much, or it is making your hair look limp, you may be using the wrong type for your hair texture/style, or using too much of it. I only find it difficult to wash out if I use too much of it. I use a very sparing amount of Spiky Edge and find it gives very good hold without being difficult to wash out.

I use probably about a dime size, or a little bit more. Make sure your hair is a little wet as it will will hold better.
