Waxes, pomades, paste, grooming cream...

I have medium length, thick/course hair. Which styling product is going to give me the most strength and hold?

I like waxes, but don't use too much. I use about the size of a nickel for my hair.

aveda grooming cream - is a great product!

I really like Gatsby's Grunge Mat product. It is Japanese so it may be hard to get in the Western world though. Decent hold with no shiny look at all.

Not to be a total brand whore, but if you can find it, Bumble&Bumble sumo wax works really well. It's really light weight and has a reasonably firm, but natural, hold. If you want something even lighter, Sumotech (same company) is also very good. However, both are quite expensive (even more than your typical hair product, which is already outrageously overpriced). Bed Head makes a couple good creams, as does Head Games (You usually have to find that at a salon, beauty suplly store, or over the internet - same with Bumble, although I've seen it in a few Safeways). American Crew pomade is decent, and that's at every supermarket.

I currently use the Gatsby Wax, works real well, nice hold no shine. Used to use American Crew's pomades, not bad either. But find the Gatsby to hold better.

I've used the same Aveda Control Stick for the past 10 years. And I walk into the salon that I used to go to (I left after my stylist did!) that's carried it for years, and only learned now that it's not being produced anymore. So they convinced me to buy this: http://www.beso.com/998759242/detail So far, I haven't gotten the hang of it (how to much use, etc.), and it has a faintly disturbing odor to me. My old stuff didn't smell like anything... or maybe it's just years of acclimation. I have somewhat thinning, shaggy, average white guy hair. Medium thickness in those places where I'm not losing it! So I don't think that Aveda cream suggested above would work for me, and it's hard to know how to distinguish between the others. And what's the overall difference between a cream and a paste? I don't think I want gel, because I don't want a shiny look. Thanks!

+1 on Aveda. But i use the Grooming Clay http://www.aveda.com/templates/produ...T_ID=PROD11868 Hold, without your hair feeling stiff, not shiny but not dull, has some great natural oils for your scalp -- it's the joint. I have no problems with American Crew Tea Tree and Baxter's products either. Aveda's just easier to get since there is a store a block down from my job..

Thanks hboogz! I realized after getting home that it's the grooming clay I was convinced to buy. How much do you use on your hair at a given time? I'm nearing haircut time, but I've been trying to a dime-sized portion rubbed into my hands, but that hasn't seemed to give me the requisite hold. I'm glad to hear that it works for you - I'll work with it some more! Thanks.

.

Yup- that's my choice. Need just a very tiny amount- I even thin it with a drop of water. Works great. One jar lasts months.

Ooh - I like the thinning it with water idea. That may make it more manageable. I find that the clay is so dense that it doesn't spread well in my hands. Good tip!

Yup- just a small amount of teh clay, like less than a pea, and literally just a drop or two of water. My hair is longer these days and this gives me some hold and styling. When I wear it very short I use just the paste.
